Our People

David Skinner is a certified Lean Six Sigma Sensei with over 20 years experience practicing law in law firms and in-house, in Canada and overseas. With significant experience on both sides of the attorney-client relationship, David understands the crisis facing lawyers and their clients. He knows how positive change in the profession can be achieved, and the impact even incremental improvements can have on a law firm’s business and the practice of individual lawyers.

David spent more than 10 years with Stikeman Elliott (in Montreal, Budapest and London) and Freshfields Bruckhaus Derringer (in London), experience that provided him with a profound understanding of exactly what lawyers in private practice do.

David spent the second half of his legal career in-house, first with a European venture capital company and then as Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary with a publicly traded biopharmaceutical company. David brings to Gimbal the perspective and insight of a client purchasing sophisticated legal services from leading law firms in Canada, the US and Europe. He knows what clients need and want from their external counsel.

David is a powerful facilitator with a demonstrated ability to build, manage and maintain lasting relationships with multi-disciplinary teams of professionals and strategic advisers.

A graduate of Williams College, Williamstown, Massachusetts, David also holds both a Bachelor of Common Law (LL.B.) and a Bachelor of Civil Law (B.C.L.) from McGill University’s Faculty of Law. He was a member of the Quebec Bar for 25 years, and remains a member of the Bars of Massachusetts and New York. 

 

Karen Dunn Skinner is a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt with over 18 years of experience practicing law in Canada and Europe. Working in law firms, as a solo practitioner and a legal process outsourcer, Karen has been part of the new legal landscape. Her diverse experience includes major privatization and regulatory work for the energy industry in Eastern Europe, as well as doctoral studies on corporate governance at the London School of Economics and Political Science in London, England. She combines this experience with her training in Lean Six Sigma to provide practical solutions to the competitive and budgetary pressures on practitioners and clients alike.

An experienced writer and speaker on legal management issues, Karen also possesses extensive research, writing, and editing skills. Karen uses these skills to coach attorneys and other professionals on powerful writing techniques, increasing the impact of their communications, whether direct to client or over the web.

Karen holds a B.Sc. from Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, and a Bachelor of Common Law (LL.B.) and a Bachelor of Civil Law (B.C.L.) from McGill University’s Faculty of Law, Montreal, Quebec. She was a member of the Quebec Bar for over 20 years, and is a former member of CAPSLE, the Canadian Association for the Practical Study of Law in Education, as well as the Editors' Association of Canada and the Quebec Writers' Federation.

Ron Friedmann has spent over two decades improving law practice and legal business operations with technology, knowledge management, and alternative resourcing. Ron was one of the first non-practicing lawyers hired by a large law firm, Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering (now WilmerHale) to manage practice support. He pioneered legal process improvement, knowledge management, online legal communities for lawyers, electronic discovery, virtual law libraries, law firm portals, and online legal services based on expert systems.

Prior to joining Fireman & Company, Ron was a senior executive at Integreon, a leading legal outsourcing company.
